Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is a procedure in which the size of a patient’s stomach is reduced in order to limit the intake of food. The surgery typically leads to dramatic weight loss, however, it should only be performed when other weight-loss methods such as dieting and exercise have proved unsuccessful and patients must be prepared to make drastic changes to their lifestyle (like eating several small meals a day and getting regular exercise) in order to lose weight and keep it off following the surgery. At Junomedical we partner with the most experienced surgeons around the world. These specialists perform Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery for up to 80% less than the average cost in the UK, US and Australia. The cost of the treatment depends on the general health of the patient as this will determine the complexity of the procedure, and on whether the surgeon performs keyhole or open surgery. After examining your medical history the specialist will provide you with a treatment plan and price quote. You’ll be able to choose from a variety of surgeons, many of whom attained their medical qualifications from UK and US medical schools, have won awards, and are members of prestigious associations.

How Does Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery Work?

The most common weight loss surgery is the Roux-en-Y technique, in which part of the stomach is closed off so that only a small pouch which can hold a very small amount of food remains. The patient feels full more quickly and therefore eats less as a result. This smaller functioning part of the stomach is then attached to a part of the small intestine called the jejunum, bypassing a part called the duodenum, which curbs the absorption of calories and nutrients. The operation can be performed either laparoscopically (using a camera and small instruments which are inserted through small incisions) or through a large incision in the abdomen (an open procedure). Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery has proven to be a highly successful method of helping patients to lose weight. Patients who undergo the procedure lose on average 60% of their extra weight. There are, however, risks associated with the surgery, therefore it is only recommended for patients who are morbidly obese with a BMI of 40 or higher and haven’t seen results from diet and exercise, as well as those with a BMI of 35-40 who have health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea or osteoarthritis.
