Nipple augmentation is a surgical procedure for both men and women designed to improve the visual appearance of a person's nipple. Oftentimes, the surgery is included as part of female breast augmentation. However, an increasing number of men are seeking this type of augmentation as well.

Unless part of a restorative surgical process following a mastectomy, nipple augmentation will not be covered by insurance. It is considered cosmetic surgery when not associated with reconstructive surgery. The surgery can be costly in the United States. With that noted, there are safe and alternatives available in other countries at a lower cost. Information on different options is accessible through Junomedical.

How Does a Nipple Augmenation Procedure Work?

When performed as a stand-alone surgery, nipple augmentation usually takes place in a clinical setting as opposed to a hospital. In most cases, a person seeking this type of enhancement has normal appearing nipples. However, the individual wants them enlarged for aesthetic purposes. The standard procedure is for tissue from another part of the body to be grafted into the nipple. Fat or cartilage is the tissue utilized in the surgery. The tissue is inserted into the nipple through a small incision. Unless breast augmentation is occurring at the same time, a local anesthetic is utilized.

Some swelling and bruising is common following nipple augmentation surgery. The swelling tends to dissipate within a few days, the bruising diminishing in a week to 10 days. A patient usually experiences a minimal amount of discomfort immediately following surgery. In some cases a surgeon may prescribe a pain medication. In other cases over-the-counter pain killers effectively address any discomfort.Within a day or two of surgery an individual is able to return to most normal routines that are not overly strenuous. This usually includes returning to work and many typical day-to-day activities. Scarring at the site of the incision is a possibility, although that is rare. In some isolated instances, the nipple returns to its original size over time. However, in most cases, the augmentation is permanent.
